Confessions of a SMARTaholic: Gabrielle Union

Gabrielle Union at Smartaholic

Gabrielle Union at Verizon Event

Gabrielle Union has flawless skin.  She drinks water – only water and seeing her in person made me think about making that move myself. This is one of the few things I learned about the actor when I attended Confessions of a SMARTaholic sponsored by Verizon Wireless and the Diva Lounge.

During the chat, led by Alesha Renee, Gabrielle said graduating from UCLA is her biggest accomplishment.  She began her acting/modeling career as a way to make money during her last year of college.

On friendships – surround yourself with high achievers. Gabrielle is close friends with Sanaa Lathan.  Sanaa is a Yale-educated, Tony award winning actor. Says there’s no competition between them.  She wants all her actor friends to find success and believes there’s room for all of them to attain it.

About family relationships – she shared a good lesson on setting boundaries.  Yes, I will help pay for you to attend college or trade school.  No, I will not invest in your impractical impulses.  She noted that when a cousin asked for a loan to begin his own record label she told him she wouldn’t help with that, but she did help him with his degree in HVAC (air conditioning systems) repair.

The celebrity who makes her starstruck is Janet Jackson (even though they’ve met on multiple occasions.)  She said Janet told her– I’m proud of you – when they saw each other at a recent concert in Australia.  How super cool is that?

The audience swooned when she talked about her leading men – Morris Chestnut, Idris Elba, Will Smith.  She said Will is as big in real life as he is on screen – warm, charming and engaging.  Said Martin Lawrence adopted her as his little sister.  She realized she was truly a friend when he told her to bring hot links for a cookout at his home one weekend.

She’s new to some technology – has a blackberry and recently started using BBM.  Says technology keeps her connected to her family and friends when she’s traveling.  She spends a lot of time in airports and hotels and it’s nice to have access to others while she’s working – often alone.

What I enjoyed most was her honesty about having to learn how to act.  She talked about being disciplined and professional.  About how important it is to be early for meetings and for work.  Arriving at 7:00 for a 7:00 meeting is late in her book. Great event by the Diva Lounge and Verizon Wireless.
